Popped Collars and the High School Athlete

Recently, Takkle.com launched their rankings for boys lacrosse. Or maybe it’s a popped-collar pageant. Seriously – what is the deal with flipping your collar up? It wasn’t that cool in 1982 when people were doing it then, so why has it made a comeback? It was sort of invented by Rene Lacoste in the 1920s, to allow players to protect their neck. Wu-Tang would have been proud. However, in the last 30 years or so, it’s just a statement that says “I’m a tough guy, but no hitting in the face”.

The epidemic is so severe that the #1 ranked Tyler Florito (mashup of floor + dorito), seems to represent this point, literally picture-perfectly.
